Marmonix MCA-206 True RMS Clamp Meter

The Marmonix MCA-206 is a 6000-count True RMS AC/DC clamp meter for electricians, MEP and HVAC technicians and facility teams. Use it to read the load on a sub-main or the running current of a chiller compressor without breaking the circuit, to check DC current on a solar PV string or a UPS battery bank, and to catch a motor’s start-up current with inrush mode. It reads 600 A AC/DC and 600 V AC/DC, and is rated CAT III 600 V.

The same 165 g meter works as a full multimeter: resistance, capacitance, frequency, diode, continuity and Type-K temperature, plus a low-impedance (LoZ) voltage mode that removes ghost voltages and NCV with a live/neutral check. How to measure current safely

1. Check the meter, test leads and jaw for damage, and wear the right PPE for the panel.
2. Turn the dial to current and press SEL to choose AC or DC.
3. For DC, close the empty jaw and zero the reading with REL before clamping.
4. Open the jaw and clamp one conductor only, centred on the jaw mark.
5. Read the value, or press INR/PEAK before starting a motor to capture inrush.
6. Use HOLD to freeze the reading if the display is hard to see.

MCA-206 FAQ

Can the MCA-206 measure DC current?

Yes. It measures both AC and DC current up to 600 A through the jaw (60 A and 600 A ranges), so it works on solar PV strings, battery banks, UPS systems, DC drives and vehicle circuits as well as normal AC loads.

What is the LoZ (low-impedance) voltage mode for?

Long cable runs and unconnected wires can pick up ‘ghost’ voltage that a normal 10 MΩ input will read. The 600 kΩ low-impedance mode loads the circuit slightly so stray voltage collapses, and you can confirm whether a conductor is really live.

How do I measure motor or compressor starting current?

Set the dial to current, press INR/PEAK until INRUSH shows, centre one conductor in the jaw and start the load. The MCA-206 captures the maximum inrush current within 100 ms.

Why do I get a reading of zero or very low current?

You have probably clamped the whole cable. Current in the live and neutral flows in opposite directions and cancels out. Clamp a single conductor only, centred on the jaw mark.

Can I use the MCA-206 on a main distribution board?

It is rated CAT III 600 V, which covers distribution boards, sub-mains and fixed installations inside a building. At the origin of the installation (service entrance, main incomer, outdoor supply) use a CAT IV meter such as the MCA-212.

Does it measure temperature for HVAC work?

Yes. With the Type-K thermocouple probe in the box it reads −30 °C to 1000 °C, which covers suction and discharge lines, supply air and heaters.
