Marmonix MTF-4200 Insertion Thermal Mass Flow Meter
Marmonix Thermal gas mass flow meter MTF-4200 is designed on the basis of thermal dispersion, and adopts method of constant differential temperature to measuring gas flow.
The Marmonix MTF-4200 insertion thermal mass flow meter covers 0.5–100 Nm/s on DN80–DN4000 insertion (or DN10–DN2000 pipe) for gases except acetylene, using constant-differential-temperature thermal dispersion so mass or standard-volume flow is read without temperature or pressure compensation in principle. Insertion accuracy is ±2.5% of reading (pipe ±1%), with pulse and 4–20 mA output plus RS485 or HART, and standard, hot-tapped or flanged sensor options. Insertion Thermal Mass Flow Meter MTF-4200
Marmonix Thermal gas mass flow meter MTF-4200 is designed on the basis of thermal dispersion, and adopts method of constant differential temperature to measuring gas flow. It has advantages of small size, easy installation, high reliability and high accuracy, etc.
The meter contains two platinum resistance temperature sensors. The thermal principle operates by monitoring the cooling effect of a gas stream as it passes over a heated sensor. Gas flowing through the sensing section passes over two sensors one of which is used conventionally as a temperature sensor, whilst the other is used as a heater. The temperature sensor monitors the actual process values whilst the heater is maintained at a constant differential temperature above this by varying the power consumed by the sensor. The greater the gas velocity, the greater the cooling effect and power required to maintain the differential temperature. The measured heater power is therefore a measure of the gas mass flow rate.
Insertion Thermal Mass Flow Meter MTF-4200 Features
The MTF-4200 offers:
- Measuring the mass flow or volume flow of gas
- Do not need to do temperature and pressure compensation in principle with accurate measurement and easy operation.
- Wide range: 0.5Nm/s~100Nm/s for gas. The meter also can be used for gas leak detection
- Good vibration resistance and long service life. No moving parts and pressure sensor in transducer, no vibration influence on the measurement accuracy.
- Easy installation and maintenance. If the conditions on site are permissible, the meter can achieve a hot-tapped installation and maintenance. (Special order of custom-made)
- Digital design, high accuracy and stability
- Configuring with RS485 or HART interface to realize factory automation and integration

How insertion thermal mass flow meters are used on large gas ducts
Large compressed-air headers and process-gas ducts are expensive to cut for a full-bore meter, yet operators still need a reliable mass-flow signal for balancing and leak detection.
An insertion thermal mass flow meter mounts a probe through a small tap so the sensing tip sits in the flowing gas. Thermal dispersion relates heater power to mass flow; hot-tap fittings allow install or removal on a live line when site rules allow. This meter class is commonly used on compressed air, nitrogen, biogas and similar utility gases for submetering and combustion-air monitoring rather than custody transfer.
A typical install uses a hot-tap or welded boss on a straight duct run, sets the insertion depth to the published position, and sends 4–20 mA or RS485 totals to the energy or process system so large-line gas use can be trended without a spool piece.
Questions about the MTF-4200 insertion thermal mass flow meter
What pipe sizes does the MTF-4200 cover?
The MTF-4200 lists DN80–DN4000 for insertion sensors and DN10–DN2000 for pipe (in-line) bodies, with a velocity window of 0.5–100 Nm/s for gas. Working pressure is up to 2.5 MPa insertion and 4.0 MPa pipe.
Can the MTF-4200 be hot-tapped?
The MTF-4200 sensor-type list includes standard insertion, hot-tapped insertion and flanged styles, so a hot-tap probe can be ordered when the line must stay in service during install. Hot-tap details follow the datasheet custom-order notes for site conditions.
MTF-4200 or MTF-4300: which should I choose?
Choose the MTF-4200 as the general insertion thermal mass flow meter for process and utility gases except acetylene, and the MTF-4300, which is the nitrogen-specific listing. Both share the same velocity and DN ranges; ask with your gas and pipe size.
