How portable Leeb hardness testers are used on steel and cast parts
In a typical fabrication, foundry or maintenance job, the part is too large, too heavy or already installed to bring to a bench hardness tester, yet the drawing still calls for a hardness value.
A Leeb tester fires a small impact body at the surface and measures its impact and rebound velocities; the ratio, multiplied by 1000, is the Leeb hardness (HL). ASTM A956 covers Leeb testing of steel, cast steel and cast iron, and ISO 16859-1 sets out the Leeb hardness test method for metallic materials. It asks for a smooth test surface with paint and scale removed, five impacts per test area (ten for non-homogeneous material such as cast iron) and an average result, and it treats conversions to other scales as approximations.
In a typical check, the inspector prepares the spot, selects the material on the tester, takes the impacts and records the average in HL or the agreed converted scale. Light or thin parts need rigid support, because ASTM A956 notes that poor support gives readings lower than the true hardness.
Questions about the MHT-710DS hardness tester
Which metals can the MHT-710DS test?
The MHT-710DS covers 10 metal groups: steel and cast steel, alloy tool steel, stainless steel, gray cast iron, nodular cast iron, cast aluminium alloy, copper-zinc alloys, copper-tin alloys, copper and forged steel. It comes with a type D impact device; DC, DL, D+15, G, C and E devices are optional.
Which hardness scales does the MHT-710DS show?
The MHT-710DS reads in HL and converts to HRC, HRB, HB, HV and HS, with published ranges of 170–960 HLD, 17.9–69.5 HRC, 19–683 HB, 80–1042 HV, 30.6–102.6 HS and 13.5–101.7 HRB. It can also convert hardness to tensile strength (U.T.S).
MHT-710DS or MHT-720-DSP: which should I choose?
Choose the MHT-710DS when AA batteries and PC-software reports suit your work, and the MHT-720-DSP when you need printed hardness tickets from a built-in printer in the field. Both are portable Leeb hardness testers for metals.
