Questions about the MUT-510S ultrasonic thickness gauge
What materials can the MUT-510S measure?
The MUT-510S measures materials that conduct ultrasonic waves well, such as steel, cast iron, aluminium, copper, plastics, ceramics, composites, epoxies and glass, over 0.75–350 mm depending on the probe. It can also measure a material’s sound velocity (1000–9999 m/s) from a sample of known thickness.
What comes with the MUT-510S?
The MUT-510S datasheet lists the main unit, a standard probe (5P Ø10), a 90° angle probe (5P Ø10), coupling agent, PC software, two AA alkaline batteries, a user manual and a packing list.
MUT-510S or MUT-520S: which should I choose?
Choose the MUT-510S when a lighter 200 g gauge with a plastic housing suits the job, and the MUT-520S when you want its metal housing for industrial environments. On marmonix.co both list 0.75–350 mm, 0.01 mm resolution, ±(0.5%H+0.01) mm accuracy, 1000–9999 m/s velocity and 2000-group storage; the MUT-520S page gives 300 g and 130×70×30 mm against 163×78×33 mm for the MUT-510S.
Case study: wall-thickness checks where only one side is reachable
In a typical inspection, pipes, tanks and plates can be reached from one side only, so remaining thickness has to be measured without cutting or drilling.
An ultrasonic thickness gauge sends a pulse through the material from a coupled probe and times the echo from the far wall. It works on steel, cast iron, aluminium, copper, plastics, ceramics, composites, epoxies and glass, and a coupling indicator shows when the probe is seated properly. An angle probe helps on tight or curved spots.
Inspectors measure along a grid on the suspect area, store each group of readings, and compare them with nominal thickness. Where the material is unknown, the sound-velocity function is used on a sample of known thickness first.
