The Marmonix MSF6-2000 SF6 gas detector (also written MSF6 2000) is a handheld leak finder for sulphur hexafluoride: a built-in pump draws air across a non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) sensor and shows the SF6 level from 0 to 1000 ppm or 0 to 3000 ppm in 1 ppm steps, responding in under 20 seconds. High, low, TWA and STEL alarm points are user-set and signal with a buzzer, an LED and the status bar of the 3.5-inch colour screen, which can show the reading as a number or as a curve. About a month of readings, the last four alarms and the last four calibrations are stored and can be read on a PC over USB. Case study: a pre-entry check and leak hunt in a switchgear basement

A substation crew is told that the gas-density relay on one SF6 breaker has dropped. Before anyone goes down into the cable basement under the panels, they need to know whether escaped gas has collected there, and then where it is coming from.

The MSF6-2000 is used in two stages:

• Check the air first: SF6 is heavier than air, so the pump inlet is held low at the stair and trench entrances; the TWA and STEL alarm points set on the detector warn before anyone stays long.
• Then trace the source: at the breaker, the inlet is moved slowly along flanges, filling valves and the density relay while the screen is switched to the curve view, so a rising slope points to the leaking joint.
• Keep the record: the readings and alarm events stay in the memory and are copied to a PC over USB for the outage request.

The repair team receives a location and a ppm history instead of a vague report of low gas pressure.
