How portable roughness testers are used to check machined surfaces

In a typical machining or grinding shop, the drawing calls up a surface finish such as an Ra limit, and inspectors need to confirm it at the machine or on the part rather than sending every piece to a lab.

A stylus roughness tester traces the surface, filters the profile with a cut-off wavelength and evaluates parameters such as Ra or Rz over an evaluation length that generally consists of five sampling lengths. ISO 4288 (now ISO 21920-3) pairs Ra above 0.02 up to 0.1 µm with a 0.25 mm cut-off and 1.25 mm evaluation length, and Ra above 0.1 up to 2 µm with a 0.8 mm cut-off and 4 mm evaluation length. ISO 4288 guidance also notes that roughness values vary from trace to trace, so a single measurement may not show full compliance.

In a typical check, the inspector sets the cut-off for the expected finish, measures at more than one position and compares the results with the drawing limit. The datasheet lists machined surfaces such as crankshafts, camshafts and cylinder-head mating faces among its uses. Where the same parts also carry a hardness requirement, the MHT-710DS portable hardness tester checks it on site.
