How a thin-probe borescope is used for remote visual inspection
Remote visual inspection is the step maintenance teams take before they dismantle anything: a camera goes in through an existing opening and the image decides whether a strip-down is needed. A typical job runs in four stages:
- Check the access hole first: the probe must pass the narrowest point, which is why a 3.9 mm head reaches spark-plug bores, drain points and small ports that wider heads cannot.
- Set focus distance by moving the cable: the 2–10 cm depth of field means the sharpest image comes from holding the tip a few centimetres from the surface, not pressed against it.
- Light and zoom before you record: adjust the LEDs to cut glare on wet or shiny metal, then use the 1.5× or 2× digital zoom to frame a crack, deposit or loose part.
- Record evidence, not memory: save a photo or clip at each point so a second engineer can review it and the next inspection can be compared with this one.
The IP67 camera rating is defined in IEC 60529 as dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion, which suits wet tanks and condensate lines; the handset itself should still be kept out of water. Rigid-cable probes like this one hold their shape for straight runs but cannot steer around tight bends, so plan the entry point on the shortest straight path to the target.
