Case study: finding where water enters a ceiling void

A stain spreads across a suspended ceiling, but the pipework above runs several metres away from the visible damage. Lifting tiles one by one disturbs the office and may still miss the source. A long, stiff camera cable can travel through the void from a single access point.

The search is done in four moves:

• One small opening: the 8 mm tip goes in through a lifted tile edge or a service hatch, and the hard cable is steered by hand along the top of the tiles.
• Light and zoom: the LEDs are raised for the dark void and the 2× zoom is used to read joints, valves and insulation from a short distance.
• Follow the wet trail: damp marks and drips are traced back toward the pipe or roof joint where they start; IP67 means drips on the lens do no harm.
• Save the evidence: photos of the wet joint go on the TF card for the plumber or the building manager.
