Much of water remains in the soil as a thin film. Soil water dissolves salts and makes up the soil solution, which is important as medium for supply of nutrients to growing plants. Retention of Water by Soil: The soils hold water (moisture) due to their colloidal properties and aggregation qualities.
Since the direct gravimetric measurement of free soil moisture requires removing, drying, and weighting of a sample which takes time, the operator can use MSM-800 as a handy device that measures the moisture by using electrical specifications of the soil. Color coded lights (LED) indicate the moisture conditions in soil. The device is widely used in farming, gardening, greenhouses, etc.
